2011 is quickly becoming one of those years that people will be reminiscing about for years to come. January and February enjoyed quality waves on both coasts and now March has continued in the same vein, with pumping surf on all coasts.
The first big south swells of the year started to pour in, while the warmer than average water temps meant plenty of swell activity from the north also. The real bonus was the number of days with little to no wind throughout the country - this resulted in pristine conditions throughout.
Gisborne once again takes the title for the highest rated region with a huge average of 4.61, edging out Dunedin with 4.58 and Taranaki on 4.50.

The same three regions dominate the highest number of reasonable surf day ratings also, with Gizzy and Taranaki both enjoying 16 decent days of surf in the month. Dunedin was in third place with 14 reasonable surf days - still a pretty damn good result.

The West Coast spots dominate the top two positions in the # of epic days ratings, with Tara's taking out first place with 5 epic days, followed by Raglan with 4 epic days. Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty enjoyed 3 epic days a piece.

Without giving too much away, one region is looking to smash all previous ratings records in April - stay tuned for next months results.

its worth putting up BOP epic days since it don't see too many each year. Any given day ul find epic waves round Dunedin tho 300 days a year to be fair, epic waves is a normal occassion here, good to see half of its not recorded tho !! Blah Blah Blah fully..

Student, Dunedin pumps but it is not accurate to say that you are guaranteed to score perfect waves everyday. There are plenty of days that are onshore for most of the coast and Ara's doesn't get consistent swell like the rest of the coast.

Its good to see N Z has plenty of quality surf .Just over this last summer I surfed in the Auckland region ,I live on the northshore I surfed in a radius of 80 kilometers and had perfect east and west coasts for a solid 10 days strait and the water was warm as just like the tropics .It really has been an epic surf summer for everyone may it continue to be that way Grego

taranaki is the place we got a coastline which has an offshore on any wind except westerly so we got clean waves within an hours drive away and flat spells rarely last three days plus its way warmer than Dunedin

Dudes you had to see Raglan to believe it the last few days over easter. Lite SE wind friday morning and 4 ft cylinders rifling thru Indicators and the Valley. Barrels on every wave. Then come Saturday arvo, 6 ft perfect with 5 minute lulls. Not even crowded. Totally class act.

Khan, Give it up man, the mount reef sucks! waste of time and money. Tay st would be better off without it and would probably have better banks.
