january surf review
Empty Gissy Gold, January 2011. Blair / S2

In this surf review, we compare our first 12 months of data to see what region has been the most consistent over the past year. There are a couple of surprises in the top 5 positions which will no doubt lead to some strong debate. If you haven't already, please read through some of the factors to take into account before getting stuck into the comments.

Before we review how the year stacked up, how did January fair in the wave quality stakes? Pretty damn good, with the highest average monthly rating in six months. This was helped by the La Nina effect - good offshore conditions for the west and more swell than normal for the east. No surprises as to what regions scored the best surf - Auckland's West Coast was the winner, with an average rating of 4/10. Taranaki and Gisborne were not far behind, scoring 3.9 and 3.87 respectively.

Back to the annual review, what region had the highest average rating over the past 12 months? Taranaki takes out the number one spot, followed closely by Dunedin in second and Auckland's West Coast in third. The top five positions with average ratings are listed below:
  1. Taranaki - 4.0
  2. Dunedin - 3.89
  3. Auckland West Coast - 3.72
  4. Gisborne - 3.63
  5. Raglan - 3.6

In terms of measuring the best surf month over the past year, the following graph shows the NZ rating by month. March and May were the top two months, with the worst being August and September:

February is lining up to be one the best months of the past year and will be further boosted by the epic waves expected from the ex Tropical Cyclone Atu. Similar weather patterns should continue into March, so 2011 is turning out to be one to remember for NZ surfers - long may it continue!
