Our current National Champion Jay Quinn is having rather a significant year. Of course it did start in January with his 2nd Open National Title, but respectfully to New Zealand’s most prestigious surf event, that pales in consequence to what’s happened since. Jay has completely turned his life upside down and it seems to be working pretty damn well- Jay’s holding down his highest ever ASP ranking; after the Portugal WQS event- he reached 54th but currently he’s placed 59th –it is still a vindication of his talent. But that’s not the life changer- mid year Jay married fellow pro surfer Luke Cheadle’s lil’ sis, Ashley.
Now just in case you don’t know who the gorgeous Ashley Cheadle is- she’s kind of a big deal- [and not only to Jay]- Ashley used to be sponsored by Billabong and was their All Australian face- you’ve seen her on your swing tags- since then she’s graced many magazines worldwide, including Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Dolly Magazine, Girlfriend, Cleo, Cosmopolitan, Max Magazine, Frankie, Yen and major Sports and Surfing Magazines. Your own lil’ sister will say “derrr don’t you know anything, she’s Miranda from Home and Away bro”.
So Jay, pretty much you know the 1st questions are going to be about Ms Ashley Cheadle right, you met her back in the days of the Pro Juniors when she was signed up by Billabong?
I did but I didn't. I actually was friends with Luke Cheadle- Her older brother. Ash is 4 years younger than me so back then she was pretty young.
It’s now common knowledge that Ashley’s pregnant- so coming from a good Irish/Aussie family I’m guessing her dad approached you with a shot gun in regards to your marriage?
They are a pretty laid back family. They were really cool about it. Really happy for us. It was a hard thing to come out and tell them though! I was still trying to figure out if it was real!! A little wee Quinny is coming out!!
Was there much Aussie mainstream media interest in your guys’ wedding- like did you get to sell the wedding pix for 6 figure amounts?
Are you making an offer CP?? Haha, not really no. We didn't actually tell anyone. So it wasn't out there for anyone to know about. Apart from close friends and family of course. We don't believe it is for everyone to know.
You’re clearly very happy, and to top it off you seem to be rolling out great results on the WQS, do you reckon it’s a hand in glove thing?
It is and it isn't I guess. Recently the results haven't rolled so much. It is quite hard to be traveling all the time and have a pregnant wife either at home or on tour with me.
You’ve re-relocated to New South Wales- it’s natural- do you think we’ll see the new Quinn family with stroller along the Wainui sands soon or ever?
At this time we are just living in NSW to be with Ash's family. We have no plans yet on where we are living. It all depends on our circumstances at the time. I really don't mind. But I am sure I will be back in NZ at some point. It's a hard place to be away from.
