ISA World Surfing Games Preparation

On winning the 2008 Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour my excitement was not so much about the title, or the fact I would receive a brand new wagon for the year (although the Santa Fe has been awesome); for me it was the prospect of getting the opportunity to represent my country at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games to be held in Portugal (Oct 11th -19th), as part of the NZ team. The games are like the Olympics of surfing, and so its an honor I won't take for granted.

The games are like the Olympics of surfing, and so its an honor I won't take for granted.

My experience as a global traveler is minimal, so the prospect of competing on the otherside of the world, while enjoying another countries culture, and lifestyle is very exciting for me, and with such a lack of knowledge I have spent a bit time over the past couple of weeks researching the break that is to host the event, trying to get a better understanding of what I'm to expect.

Lucky for me, by all accounts the waves are very similar to my home break of Mount Maunganui, with the climate in and out of the water similar to what we are experiencing now as we head into summer (water 19c, days on land 20c-25c).
The one major hurdle I had to overcome before I could even begin to prepare to head away, was to come up with the funding. I was very fortunate this year to have been signed by the clothing brand Honolua, whose support has been unreal, helping kick start the travel fund, along with my long time sponsor Smith optics, However the bulk of the expenses are being covered by the supporters of the surf2surf website, through the purchasing of my artwork. I sold 120 limited edition prints with around 70% of sales coming through this site, I am so grateful for that support!

Many of those who purchased prints would have had the opportunity to make contact via email with my partner Angela, she worked tirelessly on the spread sheets, keeping track of the money, and making sure I got the prints away to you all, without her support this trip wouldn't be happening; So thank you's all round.
I'll look forward to keeping you all up to date with the teams progress through this blog page over the next few weeks.

 Cheers Daryn
