October 20, Final UPDATE

Well this is offically my last blog from the smelly streets of Costa de Caprica, with the finals held today in less than perfect conditions, waves ranging from waist to shoulder high. That however didn´t dampen the sprits on the beach, or the standard of surfing in the water.

I have earned myself the overall placing of 9th in the world, which on the one hand was a good result, but it did leave a bitter sweet taste in my mouth, with a few weird scores being laid down by the judges so the team says, but I´m not going to brew on that, content with the fact I gave it my best shot!

A personal highlight for me was being asked to comentate the live webcast of the longboard final, quiet an honor, and with a birds eye view of the proceedings and blow by blow results coming up on screen following each ride. Mathew Moir from south Africa came out on top, although he was pushed to the final whistle by Harley Engelby of Australia, who scored a near perfect 9.8 ride in the dying seconds, only to fall short of a back up higher than an 8, Harley finished 2nd.
The open final was won by CJ Hobgood, who was a deserving winner, showing his mastery on an above every wave he rode.

Well I´ve had ´the time of my life here, loved every minute of it and while the result was a few placings short of my greater goal, I´m happily off to enjoy my last few days as a tourist, checking out a little art and culture.

Thats me done,

Regards Daryn

October 17th UPDATE

Well, a really heavy day for the crew here in Costa de Caprica, with all our girls now out, and both bodyboarder guys out, and Maz dropping to the repercharge round, all of these where in very close faught heats. with semi controversial judging calls... from my heavily bias opinion.

but the good news is the swell is once again on the rise, and the remaining crew are amped on doing well, and surfinbg at the top of there game.

I still haven´t surfed my heat and won´t be up tomorrow ether so still playing the soccer dad to the crew while running the touch flying the flag, but really enjoying the time here!

hope to bring some better news tomorrow!

October 15th UPDATE

Well it´´s another fine day here in Portugal, yesterday was bloody hot and I´´d say today is going to be just the same. The swell has dropped off day by day but is still super clean and fun in the 2ft range, with very shifty peaks prevaling. While our crew has been surfing well, the standout for us in the open has been Maz, sticking it to CJ Hobgood to progress through to round 4 of the main round. The inconsistant waves where the down fall of Leon and Luke, dropping Luke into the repercharge round andf Leon out of the event.

Daisy and Jess had mixed fortunes, with Daisy progressing through her first heat, only to just miss out in her second she now joins Jess in the repercharge rounds.

Our bodyboarding crew will be hitting the water again today, while I continue my role as official flag bearer and support person.

Sinto-me bem em Portugal
(I feel good in Portugal)
