I had the chance of chatting with the ‘New Kid’ on the big wave scene, Sam Hawke. He is the funniest human alive, so I thought I would toss him a few questions to let you guys get the scoop on the kid they’re all talking about.

Name: Samuel Thomas Hawke
Nick name: There’s a few depends on whose asking, mainly Samwise, Sizzle, Sausage, Dizzle, or Hawkey!
D.O.B: 16/10/1991 - (18 Years Old)
Years Surfing: Started when I was 13 at Pacific Surfari, Dougies surf School In Brighton
Hometown: Chch, East.
Relationship Status: Desperate for anything. 0273219751
Sponsors: Quiksilver Wetsuits and Clothing and Power Balance bracelets and John Key. Shoes or sunnies please?
Highlights: Paddling into Papas, I have unfinished business, (nearly died last time).
Fave Wave: Spot X Northland
Fave Food: KFC hot Box fillets hot and Spicy combo. boom
Dream Girl: Proccys Missus
Biggest Douche Bag: Justin Beiber
Biggest Wannabe: Dudes that go into town and peacock, (i.e wear weird clothes so that dames look at them).
Worst Experience: Got lost in the bush, middle of night, snow storm, in my Quiky wettie, got hypothermia but got out 5 hours later - Character building.
Fave Surfers: Elton Johno, Miles Ratima, and Hawaiian Prince Makua Rothman.
Idols: ITM fishing ma Matt Watson, Paul Fisher and Elton Johno,

DP - What’ve you been up to:
SH - WOW? Not a lot Daniel, slugging away at Uni down in Dunedin trying to start surfing more, it’s amazing coming from Chch.

So talk me through that ‘wave’ everyone’s talking about at Chopes:
What wave? Nah it was amazing and I am over the moon about the whole trip .Going to go back next time and get outrageously deep and spat into the channel just like Raimana, hot dang that will be all time.

You must’ve scored some serious action after those efforts: 0273219751
Money or the fame: Cash money boy! It doesn’t buy happiness but a Jet Ski and sled would go down a treat right now!

How did you get so good coming from the shallow talent pool of the South?
The pool is, Olympic sized you just got to come down to look at it? I was drowning in the pool.

Who has the biggest balls, Dougie or Dorian?
Have yet to see/ touch either. They are both bald though, hmmmm interesting???

Who has the worst waves, Mount Maunganui or Chch?
Been to mount once it was one foot; CHCH is freezing so it wins that one.
There are a few kooks out there that are towing in without ever paddling, what yah reckon?

Tow or paddle?
Power to the paddle I love paddling in and Barrels! But you can’t paddle into 15ft chopes or 20ft shippies, (that’s next on the list), unless your name is Laurie Towner.

If you had to sit and judge an event which would you choose, Dirty Stand up paddling or Filthy Goat Boating?
Definitely Goat boating, suping is for Queers.

They reckon you have the ‘best’ thighs/arse combo in NZ surfing.
That’s not possible that title easily goes to Sam Guthrie. Rifles out all the ladies with his thighs/arse combo

Any words of advice for the up and coming charger:
Don’t listen to me I am useless and poor! But if you were to listen to me, I’d tell you to make the most of your opportunities.

How do the chicks down in Dunnos compare to the lot in Chch?
Dunedin University is a fine tertiary facility; just so happens most good looking women from around Aotearoa choose to study there. That’s a damn shame. Dunnos pants down.

Where will you be in 10 years time?
Not living in New Brighton.

Good chatting with you Sam, any last words?
Kia ora Daniel, good to have a bro like you on the Quiky Team, and good luck with starting the whanau! xx

Also I would love a ski so I can whip into some of the dirtiest slabs NZs got going on, if you think you could help a poor ass like myself, get in touch and I’ll lay down a mother of a proposal and attempt to get a good dose of coverage for you.

Hey bro whatever floats your goat boat slagging other codes, but, has Sam forgotten that Raimana is a SUP legend?

Nice point Reegan, I reckon these two fools must have been dropped on thier heads when they were babies. Not that I condone the SUP revolution. Raimana, Vetea and Laird can keep thier chopes SUP-ness. Full respect. But there has been an alarming increase in the "street sweepers" with thier bung hips and funny surf etiquette clogging the line ups. Yes SUP is the new Goat Boat. But there is a vast difference between the Tahitian and Hawaian crew and the hip replacement old boys from Milford looking for an easy ride.

Kia ora Eldon - point taken. I have lived being surrounded by big wave maniacs and small wave stylists, longboard, shortboard, even had a friend who was a goat boater back in the day, shit even know a few knee boarders. What ever floats your boat.Im not the one who is running down NZ's surf breaks and "who woulda thought" even the mount could produce good surf. I respect people who have earnt it. Do I deserve respect ? You'd have to ask my bro's who I surf with every day. Hats off to Miles Ratama, DK, Dougy and young Sammy Hawke for putting us on the map in the big wave world. And to the rest of the surfing community in NZ. Get out there and enjoy.

Kia Ora Eldon and Chopper, its refreshing to see some debate with a bit of substance! SUP here in Ngati Porou has become alot more cultural and the boys are charging 4-5 metre downwind swells for over 60-70 kilometres along our coast! Not to mention charging some of our most solid point breaks. Cant wait to see Procy back on the coast with our Rangatahi too!

Sammy - No need to be hater my mate. And just out of curiosity, is DK a queer cos he rides SUP. I think not. And some of the big wave chargers down your way like shane baxter ride SUP to cuz - is he a queer? Again I think not.Bros as for Procky, Uncle is all good, hes just throwin it out to provoke abit of debate. Knowing old Uncle his question would of been "tongue and cheek".See you in the water - dihah!!!!

Goober people like you are the biggest problem in the water right now. You promote anger just cause you think you are more than you are. truth is who gives a crap what you ride as long as you repect those in the water with you and those who have been there before you. DKs a great guy and commands respect in the water not because of what he rides but how goes about it. You will probably come back with some smart ass comment but that just proves what you are. Big ups bully regan chopper see you boys in the water
