Hitting the road

-- Been on the road a bit over the last couple of weeks, Damon and I picked up a ‘Spaceship’ camper van from Auckland and then we were free to roam the country.

Neither of us had wheels so we were lucky enough to get hooked up, now we can get from A to B and beyond, it’s great. So we packed up the van and went all the way to...Raglan! The same place we had just come from, but the waves were pretty good back home so I was happy to be there.

Next stop was the mount, we’d been checking the reports and knew there’d be something there to surf so off we went in our bright orange whip. First stop was to my favourite bar, Major Toms, for a few brews and some 1980’s video games, had to call it an early one though as we’d have to be up early in the morn before the forecast offshore breeze blew any swell away.

We were lucky enough to meet up with fishing Guru Cory Scott and cray fish pillager Bobby Hansen the next day; they were awesome enough to give us a ride to Punis farm, cheers lads. Waves were fun, nothing amazing, but pretty sure I saw the ghost of Moko sitting on the beach next to the Matakana shipwreck smoking a ciggy...that was weird.

We felt like we hadn’t done enough driving in our new van, so the next day it was off to Gisborne, even though the swell forecast was lookin really average. Damon was adamant that it would be good down there, I was a bit wary about that, not being too sure whether he had ulterior motives that involved 1 of the 7 single girls in Gizzy, but we went anyway. Turns out there were actually no girls in Gizzy at all, gutted. I’m getting frustrated with surfing bad, I keep falling off. I’m not going to admit that I’m a kook so I’m going to blame it on my disgusting Amish-like beard. It’s filthy and ginger and looks gross, I think it may be subconsciously ruining me so I might get a lighter and singe it off asap...could be a phenomenal change in my surfing, looking forward to seeing instant results.

Surf’s been kinda fun at home, been trying to shred-dog a few peelers at the ol’ Indicators.  Had quite a few people ask me what I’m doing and where I’m going in terms of this whole vid project thing, I wish I knew. I don’t know. Just taking it day by day for now, my decisions about where to go are usually swayed by the potential of good food more so than great surf but when the two combine it’s absolute magic.

It’s definitely fun cruising around from place to place, not knowing where to go most of the time so we just wing it and hope for the best.  Maybe the south island could be a good place to go? I don’t know, might just jump in the van and see where we end up.
