Justin Summerton, Ben Galbraith, Daisy Day [Keep and eye out for her new photo book this December btw.] CPL, Aaron Kereopa, Ian King, Andrew Forester, Ken Thomas, Nick Toa, Rob Baker, Tony Ogle, Jess Santorik, Daryn Mc Bride, Damon Meade, Peter Lambert, Andrew McAlpine, Matt Hishon, Fran Kora and Dave Jenkins are all respectfully interviewed with a great deal of integrity shining through Aaron’s craft of words. It becomes very clear that Aaron has sat down with each of his subjects; he’s really listened and then really honed these diatribes into insightful passages.
The combination of our reluctance as Kiwis and then as surfers to be anything other than humble is often the first hurdle an interviewer has to overcome, but Aaron has a great panache for lulling the interviewee into his trust. Aaron has legitimately striven to get to know all 19 strangers. He hasn’t glossed over the personal hurdles of the subjects but the general tone throughout the book is a very upbeat and positive exploration into some of society’s fringe dwellers.
I suspect this book will appeal to non-surfers as much as to fellow surfers because there is a real subtext of how the act of surfing affects each individual. As a part of the research process Aaron’s cleverly asked his subject the same set of questions to garner variances of the same answers. This ultimately and collectively drives home the themes of surfing’s claiming and healing powers for us all. It also illuminates how surfing puts us quite pleasantly out of step with the mainstream.
By default it would be very easy to claim this is the best piece of surf writing to come out of NZ in a very long time… it’s the ONLY body of work to come hither in a while. Regardless of that dubious qualification, Creating Waves is good, no, it is excellent and will sit very comfortably dog-eared, well-read right next to your copy of ‘Gone Surfing’ by Luke Williamson. Creating Waves is available now nationwide in bookstores at a mere 30 odd bucks, that’s like less than a gold coin koha per profile.
