A Charade from Dawn till Dusk…

Arriving at the beach at 7am, the last standing competitors of the NZ Surfing Team had a long day ahead of them.  The conditions varied intensely throughout the day – from perfect 4ft barreling rights to fat 2ft mushy waves.
Jay Quinn again was our first competitor up in the quarter finals for the Open men’s round.  The waves didn’t come Quinn’s way and each time they peaked near him there seemed to be another competitor with right of way.  Ending up in 4th place, Quinn moved through to the repercharge round six.

Above: Daniel Procter from Gisborne

Round 3 of the repercharge saw Daniel Procter win the first heat.  In the mushy waves, he progressed through to round four with Venezuelan Francisco Hernandez.  Procter gracefully combined nose riding with sweeping turns which went down well with the judges.

Next up was Thomas Kibblewhite in the quarter finals of the Qualifying round.  In a stacked heat, Kibblewhite came in 3rd to UK’s Greg Skinner and Steve Newton of the USA.  Performing some very critical turns but unfortunately coming unstuck a couple of times meant that Kibblewhite joined Procter for round four of the repercharge round.

Just prior to the commencement of Quinn’s next heat, the event was placed on hold.  As Procter explains in the video update, the rain was unwavering, the wind was intense and the thunder and lightning were downright gnarly.  It wasn’t until 3pm when things finally kicked off again.

And boy did they kicked off.  Quinn put on a stellar performance for the loyal crowds, with powerful, spray throwing turns.  He easily moved forward with Austin Ware of the USA and will be on bright and early Friday morning (Costa Rican time) for round 7 of the Open men’s repercharge round.
Procter managed to also surf through round 4 of the quarterfinals – in a very close heat, he scrapped through over Martin  Perez of Argentina.  Procter, along with Quinn, will surf on day 7 of the Billabong ISA World Games; carrying the NZ team forward.

Kibblewhite struck an incredibly unlucky chord in the last heat of the day, when it was verging on dark.  Holding second place for 19 minutes and 30 seconds of the heat, Kibblewhite was quite literally pipped at the post.  Kibblewhite had caught some solid waves, including a 4-5ft bomb, and needed to hold off Tahitian Audibert Tama.  Being unable to hear the scores or see  the oncoming waves certainly didn’t help the situation!  In the closing seconds of the heat, the Tahitian took off on a wave that put him through to round five by .33.  Kibblewhite can hold his head high however, as he is now placed within in the top 13  longboarders in the world, which is undoubtedly an achievement in itself.

A highlight to come on day 7 will also be the tag team race.  NZ has been chosen to participate.  4 competitors will be put up against various other countries where, one at a time, they run into the ocean, catch two waves, run back out and tag their next team member in.  A combination of speed and scores will determine which country comes out on top!
