| After
several days of warnings of the worst storm in a decade bearing down on
us it wasn't until i emerged from the All Black game feeling like id
been kicked in the nuts that i noticed the weather had really set in,
gale force winds and the sound of huge surf rumbling in the distance. It had not stopped raining all day, rivers were all about to breach their banks. Yet still I set the alarm for 5:30 am hoping somehow a miraculous wind shift would happen and the rain would stop. Early morn and it was calm the swell had filled in and the clouds had begun to part, could this be real i was thinking. After taking a gamble to head down south with a couple of my mates Blair Stewart and Steve Roberts, we couldnt help but feel we were merely sitting in the eye of the storm the northerly had eased to not a breath of wind and within a short time on our drive switched southerly storm force and back came the rain. Reports came flooding in literally of conditions elsewhere and it didnt look hopeful for the spot we had hoped for. After coming over the last hill through the mist and there she lay in all her beauty draining off below sea level from the rock slab, it took seconds for the boys to gear up and paddle out throwing themselves over the ledge into the deepest thickest pits you'd ever see in this country. Those same pits also threw them out onto the dry reef from time to time make no mistake of that, knowing this would happen the lads wore booties, thick wetsuits and even helmets. Then as if someone had forgot to put their coin in the slot she turned off. huey had turned off the swell tap and as fast as it came it went. still stoked, wet and cold nothing a mean feed of fish and chips couldnt fix.
