The day was aimed at providing a fun and encouraging environment for females to learn to surf and stand-up paddle board. Auckland’s Orewa Beach came to the party, providing some peeling, albeit tiny waves - perfect to raise the girls’ confidence levels.

A surf safety speech started the morning off and had some of the girls questioning their motivation for being there! Once we’d established that the placid waves of Orewa weren’t a threat to their safety, but the general message was more applicable to a solid swell; the girls were rearing to go again.
To get everyone’s bodies moving, a yoga session was fitting to start off the action before the wetsuits were adorned. A group of 10 girls then grabbed a stand-up paddle board and cruised down to the Orewa bar to have a play under the instruction of Dean and Josh from Naish Paddle Boards.
That left over 25 girls rearing to give surfing a go. As we matched them up to a surf board, kindly provided by Ultimate Surf Shop, their excitement was starting to build. A quick on the beach instruction session was all it took to get the girls into the water and onto their feet.
The surf-stoke the girls got when they stood up for the first time was truly infectious. You couldn’t help but have a huge smile spread across your face as an instructor, when you saw the girls turn around after “surfing” for the first time with a euphoric look across their face. It didn’t matter to the girls that the waves were ankle high or lacked the power many of us crave. There were waves, and that was all that mattered to them. That really brought many of the instructors back to the ground roots of surfing; you have to appreciate what the ocean gives you to play with.
Thank you to all of the girls (and their supportive parents) who made the effort to be there on Saturday. The hugely positive response has made us start planning for the next “Get to the Beach Girls” day!
